Review of “Heaven Knows” by PinkPantheress: The popular TikTok creator takes a cautious approach.

In the year 2021, several music videos posted by the user PinkPantheress became extremely popular on TikTok. These videos received millions of views due to the catchy mix of throwback UK garage beats and spoken vocals by an unidentified producer. It was later revealed that a 20-year-old student from London was the mastermind behind these tracks. Following a signing with a major record label, PinkPantheress (who chooses to keep her name private) has achieved success with her single “Boy’s a Liar Pt 2” reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard charts earlier this year.

PinkPantheress’s first album is highly anticipated for 2023, and it mostly delivers. When she incorporates dancefloor sounds from the early 2000s, like in Another Life’s breakbeats, Mosquito’s UK garage acoustic guitar samples, and Blue’s two-step drums, she appeals to millennial listeners’ nostalgia while also providing something fresh for Gen Z. These songs are enough to capture attention on social media and as singles, but the constant use of Auto-Tune and falsetto can become repetitive when listening to the entire album. In the end, Heaven Knows needed to move beyond PinkPantheress’s TikTok style in order to make a mark in the music industry, but it remains rooted in the sounds of the past.
