A film based on the life of billionaire technology mogul Elon Musk is currently in development, as independent studio A24 secured the rights to adapt Walter Isaacson’s recent biography. Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky is set to direct the project.
According to Variety magazine, A24 emerged victorious in a competitive bidding battle to obtain the authorized biography of Elon Musk written by Isaacson. The biography was released in September and received significant criticism from some sources. The Guardian described it as a “boring and unenlightening tome” while also sparking its own controversies. For instance, Isaacson had to retract a claim that Musk had ordered the shutdown of his Starlink satellite network to prevent a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian warships.
Isaacson, a previous leader and top executive at CNN, has written numerous biographies about notable figures such as Henry Kissinger, Benjamin Franklin, and Einstein. His most successful biography, published in 2011, was about Apple CEO Steve Jobs and was later turned into a movie in 2015 with the same name, featuring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet, written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle.
Most recently, Aronofsky was the director of The Whale, featuring Brendan Fraser, which resulted in Fraser winning an Oscar for best actor. Additionally, Aronofsky was nominated for an Oscar for best director for his dark ballet film, Black Swan.
Elon Musk, who is currently 52 years old, was born and raised in South Africa. According to Isaacson, he endured “mental torture” from his estranged father, Errol. Musk holds the positions of CEO and chief technology officer at SpaceX, as well as chairman and CTO at X Corp (formerly known as Twitter). He is also the CEO of car company Tesla, but in 2018, he was fined and forced to step down as chairman due to misleading social media posts. Musk is currently ranked number one on Forbes’ Real Time Billionaires list with a net worth of $223.8 billion (£183.2 billion).
