Alex De Minaur was left devastated by the crushing defeat his team suffered in the Davis Cup match. He expressed his disappointment by saying, “It stinks like hell.”

The Davis Cup team from Australia is determined to come back to Malaga and win the championship next year, despite their loss in the final of the men’s international team tournament on Sunday.

Unfortunately for the Australians, they faced a dominant Jannik Sinner and he secured a first title for Italy in 47 years with his 6-3, 6-0 singles win over Alex De Minaur, making the doubles match unnecessary.

De Minaur also featured in last year’s loss to Canada in the final at the same arena and the world number 12 took solace from how well Australia had performed since the finals format was changed to the best of three rubbers.

According to the speaker, no other country has been able to achieve consecutive victories in the past two years. Therefore, our overall performance is quite impressive. This statement was made to the press.

“We are in a very close proximity and the situation is unpleasant, but as I mentioned in this same scenario last year, we will bounce back. We will overcome this obstacle. Our future looks very promising.”

In 2003, Australia was victorious in their 28th title, and in the past two finals, they have made it without the participation of Nick Kyrgios. Unfortunately, Kyrgios is currently recovering from an injury and has not played in the Davis Cup since 2019.

Lleyton Hewitt, the captain, has created a close-knit team dynamic among players such as De Minaur, Alexei Popyrin (ranked 40th in the world), Jordan Thompson (ranked 55th), and doubles partners Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.

De Minaur, feeling disappointed, admitted that he was outplayed by Sinner, ranked fourth in the world, in the second singles match. This comes after Popyrin’s loss to Matteo Arnaldi in the first match.

“He’s in the midst of an incredible surge of confidence,” he remarked. “The level he’s displaying is truly commendable.”

I am determined to improve and find strategies to defeat players like this. Unfortunately, I was not at my best today. I am disappointed that I could not give my teammates the opportunity to play doubles, which is the most disappointing aspect for me.
