Ajla Tomljanović delays her return to tennis due to surgery to remove fibroids.

Ajla Tomljanović was put out of action due to a surgical procedure to extract benign growths from her uterus.

The Australian tennis player has recently returned to the court after a difficult 2023 season plagued by injuries. However, she announced that she will be taking a break from her career for a few weeks to undergo surgery for uterine fibroids.

Tomljanović shared the update on Instagram, accompanied by a picture of her smiling while reclining in a hospital bed.

“Regrettably, I will not be participating in any competitions for the next few weeks. I was eagerly anticipating the upcoming hard court events,” she stated.

“I recently underwent a procedure to remove uterine fibroids and am currently recovering at home. I look forward to returning soon.”

The right-handed player, originally from Croatia, included a link in her post for more details about uterine fibroids. She stated that it was for both women and men who are interested in learning more about this topic.

In 2022, Tomljanović advanced to the quarter-finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open. However, in 2023, she faced a series of injuries and illnesses that greatly impacted her performance for the season.

The individual, who is 30 years old, resumed playing towards the end of last year and advanced to the second round at the Australian Open. However, they were defeated in three sets by Jelena Ostapenko, who was ranked 11th.

After the defeat at Melbourne Park, Tomljanović stated, “Although I should be upset, I am surprisingly calm because it didn’t feel like I made a major mistake.”

Reflecting on the past year, I can’t help but feel fortunate to be where I am today.

Tomljanovic participated in the Thailand Open last month, but lost to Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi in a straight-set match.

Last April, the player ranked 221st in the world achieved a personal best singles ranking of 32nd before undergoing surgery for a knee problem.

According to Tomljanović, the knee may never fully recover, causing a need for a different approach to one’s career. This was stated at the Australian Open.

International tennis players showed their support for Tomljanović on Instagram after she announced the procedure.

“Even on the day of her surgery, former Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady still looks flawless,” commented Brady regarding her appearance.

“Stay well, recover quickly, looking forward to seeing you soon,” wrote Matt Ebden, the winner of Australian Open doubles.

“Sending healing wishes your way, Ajla!” commented four-time grand slam winner Kim Clijsters.
