Sancho and Reus propel Dortmund to Champions League quarter-finals by defeating PSV

Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus scored goals for Borussia Dortmund in their 2-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, securing a place in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in three years with a 3-1 total score.

Sancho, who was borrowed from Manchester United, skillfully placed his shot between the legs of an Eindhoven player and into the net off the post in the third minute. Later on, Reus secured the victory with a composed finish during the second-half stoppage time.

Sancho scored for the second time in two games since rejoining Dortmund on a loan from United. He had previously joined United from Dortmund in 2021 on a five-year contract, but had struggles securing a consistent role and only played three times this season before going back to the Ruhr region in January.

In Saturday’s league match against Werder Bremen, Sancho scored a goal, contributing to the team’s 2-1 win. Later on, Donyell Malen came close to scoring another for the hosts, but his shot missed just wide of the far post.

“I believe that our efforts paid off today as we secured our spot in the quarter-finals,” stated Edin Terzic, the coach of Dortmund. “We executed a fantastic performance in the first 30 minutes, possibly our best of the season. We missed opportunities to score more goals during our aggressive attack. However, we shifted our focus in the second half and defended with determination.”

In 2007, Eindhoven made it to the quarter-finals but have not reached that stage since. However, in the second half, they showed improvement and substitute Hirving Lozano nearly scored with a powerful shot that hit the post. Later, Johan Bakayoko successfully bypassed Mats Hummels and forced the Dortmund keeper, Gregor Kobel, into making a good save in the 70th minute. Eindhoven continued to push for a tying goal.

Niclas Füllkrug believed he had calmed his team’s nerves and secured the win with a volley from a Reus free-kick in the 77th minute. However, his goal was disallowed for being offside and the German side had to withstand increased pressure from the Dutch team. Luuk de Jong had a chance to take the game into extra time but instead of making an easy tap-in, he missed wildly over the crossbar.

“I received the ball and performed a quick exchange with Teze,” De Jong explained. “However, I was off balance when I took the shot and everything happened in a split-second. Naturally, I regret not making the goal.” Dortmund then quickly capitalized on the next play as Reus scored, securing their victory.
