Tom Cruise has agreed to star in the latest movie from acclaimed director Alejandro G Iñárritu, known for his work on The Revenant.

Tom Cruise has taken a surprising turn from his usual big-budget action movies and will now star in the upcoming film by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the director of Birdman.

Deadline reports that Cruise has committed to playing a lead role in the movie, which is shrouded in mystery except for its use of the English language and writing by Iñárritu, Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, who also worked on Birdman.

Warner Bros is set to produce the movie under Cruise’s newly announced contract, where he can also collaborate with other Hollywood companies. The third installment of Top Gun is currently in development at Paramount, while Cruise is currently filming Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, which was postponed due to the pandemic and is scheduled for release in May 2025. Additionally, Cruise is dedicatedly working on a long-awaited project that will involve filming in outer space.

In addition to his achievements in action movies, Cruise has a notable track record in both serious and humorous films. In 1994, he co-starred with Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire and then took on the leading role in Jerry Maguire, earning an Oscar nomination. In 1999, he appeared in Stanley Kubrick’s last film Eyes Wide Shut and later received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. In 2005, he co-starred with Jamie Foxx in Collateral and portrayed a movie producer in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder.

In 2022, Iñárritu, the initial Mexican nominee for the top director Oscar, presented Bardo, a fictitious account of a small collection of truths. His previous English-language work was in 2015, with The Revenant, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. His movies have received eight Academy Awards, three of which were for The Revenant (with best director) and one for a special accomplishment in the virtual-reality short film Flesh and Sand.
