Manchester City extends lead in WSL rankings with goals from Shaw and Hemp against Everton.

Manchester City claimed the top spot in the Women’s Super League standings following their 2-1 victory over Everton.

The city continued their momentum from the previous game in which they defeated Chelsea, as they secured a win with goals from Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp. This victory now puts them three points ahead of Emma Hayes’ team, who will be playing against Leicester on Sunday.

Shaw scored the first goal in the fifteenth minute by taking advantage of a mistake made by Justine Vanhaevermaet as she tried to dribble out of her own penalty area. Shaw received the ball and smoothly sent it past Courtney Brosnan. Hemp then increased the lead ten minutes into the second half, making a determined run from the right side and cutting in to accurately shoot low from a distance of approximately 20 yards.

Hanna Bennison scored the standout goal of the game for her team, cutting the deficit in half at the 60-minute mark. She skillfully turned and placed the ball into the top corner from 25 yards, bouncing in off the bottom of the crossbar. However, the opposing team was unable to score an equalizing goal and City maintained their lead, earning their 12th straight win in all competitions.

Gareth Taylor, the manager of City, expressed that we dominated a large portion of the game. He noted that the opposing team only scored a exceptional goal and had one opportunity, which occurred in the second half. Our victory and acquisition of three points is highly significant.

“I had to cut our preparation short due to the international break and we could only fit in a light training session yesterday. Despite this, I was thoroughly impressed by the level of play we displayed today. The second goal was a perfect example of our team’s strengths. We displayed excellent ball movement and a fantastic finish by Lauren. Overall, I thought she played incredibly today, both on and off the ball.”
