Three people died while making repairs on an old wall located at a Unesco world heritage site in Tunisia.

Tunisian authorities reported that a portion of the historic walls surrounding the Old City of Kairouan fell on Saturday, resulting in the death of three masons who were working to repair the Unesco world heritage site.

The Civil Protection department reported that two workers were injured when a 30-meter (100ft) portion of the 6-meter-high walls collapsed near the Gate of the Floggers.

According to department spokesperson Moez Tria, a team was working on restoring the 3km (two mile) long wall surrounding the Old City. The accident may have been caused by heavy rainfall in the area over the past few days.

Established in the year 670 AD, Kairouan holds great religious significance as one of the holiest cities in North Africa and is a popular destination for tourists. It has been recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1988.
