The president of Liberia is doing well despite the hot weather causing a shortened inauguration ceremony.

The spokesperson of Liberia’s newly elected president, Joseph Boakai, has reported that he has recuperated from a bout of lightheadedness caused by the heat. This resulted in him having to end his inauguration speech early and being escorted off the stage on Monday.

The 79-year-old took office after winning against George Weah in a runoff election in November. The inauguration took place outdoors in Monrovia, the capital of the west African country, amidst hot and humid conditions.

During his speech, Boakai took a break and his assistants quickly came to cool him. He continued a few minutes later, but stopped again and his assistants assisted him in leaving the stage, bringing the ceremony to a premature end.

“It was the temperature. The temperature was quite high. According to Mohammed Ali, spokesperson for Boakai’s ruling Unity party, there should have been a fan or some other solution present,” stated Ali in response to the occurrence.

“He mentioned at the event that he experienced exhaustion due to his age, but he is currently doing well.”

During the election campaign, Boakai’s age and energy were brought into question by some of his opponents. However, his team disregarded the criticism.

Despite the unexpected ending of the inauguration ceremony, Boakai had already been sworn in before he was assisted out. The officials continued with the scheduled lunch, but it was unclear where Boakai had gone.
