A football game in the Cayman Islands turned chaotic as at least seven individuals sustained severe injuries due to a shooting incident.
Police have reported a shooting on Sunday night in West Bay, located in the north-western area of Grand Cayman island. They suspect that the incident may be connected to gang activity.
At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Police Commissioner Kurt Walton reported that four out of seven victims have been released from the hospital.
The investigation suggested that a single shooter targeted a few individuals in the north-east section of the stadium, with the intention of killing at least two of them.
He stated that it was a deliberate attack.
Walton noted that four gangs originally operated in the Cayman Islands: two of them in the capital of George Town and two others in West Bay where the shooting occurred. Three of those gangs have since merged, but it is not clear if a certain gang was involved.
Walton declined to provide details.
At the beginning of the second half of the match, a shooting took place. According to Walton, there were approximately 200 to 300 people present at the game at that time.
He expressed that it could have been extremely disastrous and unprecedented.
Officials reported that the initial gunfire occurred in the vicinity of the locker rooms at Ed Bush Field.
At this point, no arrests have been made and the police have not revealed the reason behind the incident. Officials are seeking witnesses and anonymous tips, and are also offering a $300,000 incentive for information that leads to an arrest.
Walton expressed that it is difficult to promote collaboration in a small setting.
A month ago, the police chief issued a caution about an increase in criminal activities that are associated with gangs, particularly in West Bay where a shooting took place on Sunday. In January, one person was killed in that neighborhood and another was wounded a few days after.
