A single individual faces charges for aiding illegal entry into the UK, following the discovery of six individuals in the rear of a truck at a ferry port in Sussex.
Two individuals were apprehended by the police in relation to the occurrence at Newhaven port in East Sussex on Friday. One was held under suspicion of engaging in people smuggling while the other was held under suspicion of entering the UK without proper authorization. The six individuals found in the truck were transported to a hospital. Sussex police have not reported any fatalities.
The individual charged in the incident in Newhaven on Friday 16 February has not been identified by the Home Office. According to a spokesperson for the department, the Border Force, immigration enforcement, and emergency services are currently investigating the matter. The person in question is facing charges for aiding in the illegal entry into the UK. Due to the ongoing investigation, the department will not be making any further comments at this time.
The emergency triggered a significant reaction from the rescue workers, with ambulances, police, and Border Force officers all present.
On Friday, Martin Sinnock, who lives near the entrance of Newhaven harbour, reported hearing the air ambulance helicopter shortly after the ferry had docked.
I observed it move around the vicinity and touch down on the ferry dock. I noticed a significant number of emergency responders present. Since there was no prior notice of a drill happening, I presumed that there may have been an actual emergency on the ferry.
