According to a statement from the Labour party, Keir Starmer paid a total of £99,431 in UK taxes on his earnings of £404,030 during the previous year.
The summary of taxes for the Labour leader in the year 2022-23 was released one week after Rishi Sunak’s, which showed that the prime minister paid a total of £508,208 in UK taxes for the previous year, with earnings of approximately £2.2m.
Starmer’s combined income as an MP and leader of the opposition was £128,291, out of which he paid £44,308 in income tax for the year 2022-23.
In December 2022, he earned £275,739 from selling a field and paid £52,688 in capital gains tax on that amount.
He and his father’s estate jointly owned the field. It was previously stated that Starmer had sold a piece of land he purchased in the 1990s for his parents, who utilized it to provide care for abandoned donkeys.
Like Sunak, Starmer also released a report detailing his taxable income, capital gains, and taxes paid for the previous tax year as recorded by HMRC. The report was compiled by certified accountants.
The single-page report revealed that his salary as an MP was £79,098 and he earned an additional £49,193 for his position as opposition leader.
The tax summary for Sunak, released by Downing Street, revealed he paid £163,364 in taxes on a total income of £432,884. Additionally, he paid £359,240 in taxes on approximately £1.8m in capital gains from an investment fund based in the US.
In 2023, the prime minister publicly released his tax documents, revealing that he had earned almost £5 million in the last three years primarily from his US investment fund profits. Sunak’s personal finances and connections to the US have been delicate matters for him.
