A striking miner faces a line of police at the Orgreave coking plant during the miners’ strike, June 1984.View image in fullscreen

It is one of the abiding images of the 1984 miners’ strike: Guardian photographer Don McPhee’s picture of a picketing miner coming face to face with a police officer.

The two men were on opposite sides of one of the bitterest industrial disputes of the 20th century. Golf balls, stones and sharpened coins had been flying, police horses were about to charge, and the leader of Britain’s striking mineworkers, Arthur Scargill, had been arrested in that same field outside Orgreave cokeworks, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, a few days earlier.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) voted to return to work on 3 March 1985 after a fiercely fought industrial dispute.
