An 84-year-old man has passed away following an explosion that completely destroyed his residence in Edinburgh.


Police Scotland has reported that an 84-year-old male passed away following a house explosion in Edinburgh.

Police received reports of an explosion at a location on Baberton Mains Avenue around 10:25pm on Friday. A 43-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man were transported to the hospital, but their current condition is not known. Authorities confirmed that there are no indications of foul play.

Several houses were cleared as a safety measure and Baberton Mains Avenue was still inaccessible on Saturday morning. The Scottish fire and rescue team reported that they were able to save two individuals from the demolished home prior to their arrival. They concluded their response at 6:39am on Saturday.

Some individuals on X claimed to have heard the explosion all the way in Gilmerton, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Edinburgh and several miles from where it occurred. Residents mentioned feeling their houses tremble, and one person shared on Twitter that they heard it while inside a movie theater in the nearby Wester Hailes neighborhood.

Police Scotland reported that at approximately 10:25pm on Friday, December 1st, 2023, they received a call regarding an explosion at a residence on Baberton Mains Avenue in Edinburgh. Emergency services are currently present at the location and it is recommended to avoid the area at this time.

A representative from the Scottish fire and rescue service stated that they received a notification at 10:26pm on Friday, December 1st regarding a gas explosion that impacted residential buildings on Baberton Mains Avenue in Edinburgh.

“Five fire trucks and specialized resources were dispatched by the operations control to the location, where firefighters were working to ensure safety. Two injured individuals were saved before our team arrived, and our crew is still at the scene.”
