A mother has been convicted of the murder of her three-year-old son after subjecting him to a pattern of cruel and sadistic treatment as punishment for minor offenses.
30-year-old Christina Robinson confessed to using a cane to physically discipline her son after he played with his food. She claimed that she was simply following the teachings of the Bible.
She refused to admit that she became angry and physically shook him, resulting in a deadly brain injury. She also denied intentionally putting him in hot water after he had soiled himself. This act caused excruciating burns that she neglected to seek medical attention for.
On Thursday, a jury at Newcastle Crown Court declared her guilty of murder and four counts of child cruelty. She will be sentenced at a later time.
In November 2022, Robinson was being tried for the murder of Dwelaniyah at their family’s house in Ushaw Moor, Durham.
During the trial, it was revealed that the acts of cruelty and murder occurred while the boy’s father, who happened to be the husband of the accused, was undergoing basic training in the Royal Air Force.
According to the prosecuting attorney Richard Wright KC, Dwelaniyah’s mother subjected him to “sadistic cruelty” during the trial. Wright added that Dwelaniyah was a victim of his mother’s frequent acts of violence and mistreatment for minor mistakes.
He stated that there was an increase in violence in the weeks before he passed away. It continued to escalate until he reached his breaking point and ultimately passed away.
Robinson confessed to using a bamboo cane from the garden to hit Dwelaniyah, as she was playing with her food.
Robinson admitted to being a member of the Black Hebrew Israelites and explained that she came across a YouTube video discussing the use of the rod for correction. She argued that she was new to the movement and has since learned that her beliefs were misguided.
On November 5, 2022, while Robinson was the sole adult in the household, the jury determined that she caused a fatal brain injury to her son. After being in the house for over 20 minutes, she finally called 999 for help. However, instead of immediately seeking assistance, she first spoke to her husband over the phone, who was 240 miles away with the RAF. She then searched on Google for information on how to resuscitate a child.
When the emergency responders arrived, Robinson appeared composed as she described her account of the incident to a law enforcement officer while medical personnel worked frantically on Dwelaniyah.
Despite attempts made at both his house and hospital, he unfortunately could not be saved and most likely passed away.
After a thorough investigation, it was discovered that he had endured multiple attacks resulting in various injuries that were not accidental in nature.
Robinson spent her childhood in Tamworth, Staffordshire. However, her family decided to move to Bulgaria when she was 16 so that her mother could become debt-free. At the age of 23, she came back to the UK and settled in the north-east region of England with her spouse to start a family.
Robinson stated that her spouse did not desire additional offspring. However, she informed the court that she desired to have a substantial family with a high number of children.
During the trial, it was revealed that Robinson was attempting to conceive using a sperm donor. In October 2022, she had also reached out to a man through a dating app.
During her pregnancy, Robinson stayed in regular communication with medical experts, yet she refused to seek care for her son’s injuries.
Initially, she informed law enforcement that Dwelaniyah’s burns were a result of playing around in the shower.
Once she presented her evidence, Robinson dismissed her defense attorneys.
On May 24th, Mr. Justice Garnham will announce a verdict, allowing the defendant time to find legal counsel after leaving her previous team.
He thanked the jury, some of whom were visibly upset, for their “obvious care and attention”, and excused them from further service for 20 years. The judge said: “I know from looking at you, this has been a stressful process, you need to get away and do something else, and think about something more cheerful. I am extremely grateful for all you have done.”
