Rafael Nadal is hoping to be able to compete in the Australian Open, despite needing medical attention during his match against Jordan Thompson at his return tournament. In the Brisbane International, Nadal seemed on track for another straight-sets victory until he missed a backhand overhead and was unable to convert his match points in the tie-break. Ultimately, Thompson claimed a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 win after a grueling three hours and 25 minutes. Nadal also took a medical timeout during the deciding set at 1-4, but was able to continue playing without significant discomfort. This is a cause for concern as Nadal had previously undergone surgery on his left hip in June and has now revealed that he is experiencing pain in the same area.
