Players express their support for grieving Aryna Sabalenka, describing her as a strong woman.

Paula Badosa expressed her discomfort about facing her close friend Aryna Sabalenka at the Miami Open, especially after the tragic passing of Sabalenka’s boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov, who was ranked No 2 in the world. Despite Sabalenka being seen practicing on social media the day after Koltsov’s death, it is clear that his apparent suicide has deeply impacted her.

On Thursday, her initial match is scheduled against Badosa, who beat Simona Halep upon her comeback from a suspension for doping.

Reworded: Badosa has revealed that she has had extensive conversations with Sabalenka, both yesterday and this morning, and is completely aware of what Sabalenka is currently experiencing. As her best friend, Badosa is deeply concerned and saddened by the difficult situation Sabalenka is facing.

When facing her, it can be uneasy, as she is my best friend and I have promised not to speak about the matter. However, she is a resilient woman and I am confident she will find strength from within. I am looking forward to a competitive and enjoyable match.

Caroline Wozniacki expressed her emotions while discussing the situation, stating that she cannot fathom what the person is experiencing. She admitted to getting teary-eyed and acknowledged that it is a terrible and difficult situation. Wozniacki also shared that she reached out to the person and offered her support.

I have a strong affection for Aryna. She has a wonderful personality and is always visibly joyful. It’s devastating to witness her pain. Everyone copes with grief in their own unique way. As she passed by today, I respected her privacy. However, I made it clear that I am available if she needs anything and that my support, along with others, is always here for her.

Koltsov, who played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins, had been a regular presence supporting Sabalenka at tournaments. The news was announced by the Russia ice hockey team Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where Koltsov had been assistant coach. Sabalenka’s father, Sergey, also a former ice hockey player, died in 2019 at the age of 43.
