Rafael Nadal has decided to not participate in the Qatar Open next week due to feeling unprepared for competition.
The winner of 22 grand slam singles titles, who was unable to participate in the Australian Open due to a hip injury, was aiming to compete in the ATP 250 event in Doha. However, the 37-year-old has changed his plans and will instead make his comeback at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells next month.
“I regret not being able to participate in the Doha tournament, where I have always received great support from the tournament team and the incredible fans of Qatar. Due to my current condition, I am unable to compete and will not be able to attend Doha as I had hoped. I was looking forward to returning to the place where I had an unforgettable victory in 2014.”
I am committed to continuing to work hard in preparation for the Las Vegas exhibition and the highly anticipated Indian Wells tournament.
Nadal returned to the court at the Brisbane International in January after taking a year off from competition due to a lingering hip injury.
The Spanish player suffered a muscle rupture close to his hip during his loss to Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals in Brisbane, but further examination showed that it was not in the exact same location.
