Germany fought back from the brink of defeat to beat Poland and win the United Cup in Sydney. Alexander Zverev saved two championship points in his second-set tie-break against Hubert Hurkacz before going on to win 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Zverev and Siegemund won the doubles match against Hurkacz and Swiatek with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 10-4. Swiatek, a four-time grand slam champion, had previously defeated Kerber 6-3, 6-0.
Germany advanced to the quarter-finals based on their winning percentage, despite coming in second in Group D. In the semi-final match against Australia, Kerber prevented two match points against Ajla Tomljanovic, while Zverev and Siegemund also saved match points against Matthew Ebden and Storm Hunter, respectively, leading Germany to the final.
During the award ceremony, Zverev expressed, “It has been an incredible experience. It has been a joy and a lot of fun for everyone to be a part of this team, particularly for me.”
I am incredibly grateful to all of you for being a part of this experience. I could not be more thrilled to share this trophy with anyone else but you.
“Congratulations to Team Poland on an impressive performance. Today, it came down to mere millimeters for you all to become the champions.”
