Emma Raducanu’s attempt to advance to the quarterfinals of the Abu Dhabi Open came to an end when she lost in two sets to Ons Jabeur, who is ranked sixth in the world.
Raducanu, a British player, has been making positive progress in her return to the court after being sidelined for eight months due to wrist and ankle surgery. The 21-year-old put up a good fight against three-time grand slam finalist Jabeur in the first set.
However, Tunisian Jabeur, who was the runner-up at Wimbledon in the previous two years, ultimately had too much power and won the match 6-4, 6-1. In the first game of the match, Raducanu lost her serve and quickly fell behind by two breaks at 5-1.
However, the winner of the 2021 US Open started to show her ability to hit the ball with precision. She managed to save three set points and then broke Jabeur’s serve, bringing the score to 5-3. A determined hold helped her narrow the gap to just one game.
Yet, Jabeur easily maintained her serve in the following game, securing the first set in just 50 minutes. The second-ranked player capitalized on her third break point to gain the upper hand at the beginning of the second set.
This time, Raducanu, who last made it to the quarter-finals in September 2022, was unable to keep up with the barrage of winners from Jabeur, who hit a total of 35, leading to her elimination.
Jabeur, 29, stated during her on-court interview that it was not an easy task for her.
“Emma is an incredibly talented player, and I hope she continues to excel because I believe she has even more potential. I am a huge supporter of hers.”
