1. Film

Killers of the Flower Moon (dir Martin Scorsese, 2023)

I recently finished reading a book by David Grann that is one of the most heart-wrenching true stories I have ever come across. This story deserves more recognition and awareness. Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation was exceptional. The story follows the Osage nation, a Native American tribe living in 1920s Oklahoma who became the richest people in the US, attracting attention from malicious individuals. Lily Gladstone portrays the main character and her performance was awe-inspiring. Interestingly, I was asked to audition for the role of Robert De Niro’s wife. Although I did not get the part, it was a fun experience to be considered.

2. Hobby

The dulcimer

I began learning to play the dulcimer around one year ago and it has been incredibly enjoyable. I have been researching information online, learning how to play chords, and even had one lesson. I then took the bold step of bringing the dulcimer on tour with me and performing in front of audiences. Despite only having three strings, it is surprisingly simple to play a melody on. I can understand why Joni Mitchell would bring one on her travels – it is compact and light, making it more convenient than carrying a guitar through airports. I hope my experience encourages others over the age of 40 to try out a new instrument.

3. Podcast

Ten Percent Happier

Dan Harris, the host of the show, used to work as a news anchor but left the media industry due to a panic attack and issues with substances. Despite describing himself as a “fidgety skeptic,” his podcast delves into Buddhism and features guests like the Dalai Lama, monks, nuns, and individuals like Esther Perel and La Sarmiento. Harris speaks with those who have endured difficult experiences and come out on the other side, providing valuable perspective. He comes across as genuine and has a witty, sarcastic sense of humor.

4. Memoir

Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You by Lucinda Williams

I am a follower of Lucinda Williams. In my opinion, she is one of the most exceptional songwriters of our generation. I chose to listen to the audiobook because I adore Lucinda’s voice and could listen to her speak for hours. Her honesty about her difficult childhood and not having her mother present was truly inspiring. It was motivating to hear that she didn’t achieve success until the age of 51, challenging the idea that women’s careers decline after 30. This gave me a sense of hope and made me realize that I may just be starting my journey.

5. Restaurant

I love hanging out at this establishment, which offers a restaurant, bar, and vinyl listening area. My friend Sean Brock, a talented chef and former acquaintance of Anthony Bourdain’s, has revolutionized the dining scene in this city. Their menu is exceptional – they even serve a prime rib that is carved at your table – and their mocktails are fantastic. The sound system is top-notch as well: they recently held a Willie Nelson tribute night and a Dolly Parton dance party. They have vintage speakers that were used to mix the Highwaymen’s final album, making it a unique piece of Nashville’s past.

6. App

I struggled to fall asleep at night despite feeling physically tired. To address this issue, I began using a sleep meditation app six months ago. By listening to 10-20 minute guided meditations with headphones, I am able to calm my mind and improve my sleep. The self-compassion meditations have also been helpful in quieting my inner critic and preventing me from scrolling through my phone late at night.
