Praised as the modern-day counterpart to Missy Elliott, Tierra Whack is a rapper from Philadelphia who has received recognition for both her impressive lyrical skills and her lighthearted attitude. Her energetic first mini-album, Whack World (2018), featured 15 one-minute songs, while subsequent EPs and singles showcased her bubbly personality across various music styles.

The previous year’s critically acclaimed suspenseful/mockumentary film about Whack, Cypher, also confirmed the unusual experiences of the unconventional artist during her success. She released her first official album, World Wide Whack, accompanied by three songs – one about her body odor (Chanel Pit), a groovy track about singing in the shower (Shower Song), and a heartfelt tune about feeling broken. The song’s name, 27 Club, alludes to Whack’s choice to not become part of the group of musicians who died at the age of 27 (she is now 28).

Whilst songs like Ms Behave showcase her versatile vocal range, a considerable number of tracks on this album take Whack’s Missy Elliott-esque sound in a darker direction, reminiscent of Sesame Street. Difficult and Numb are explicitly self-explanatory, and even some of the lyrics on Imaginary Friends are particularly challenging to listen to. This album presents a diverse and colorful depiction of an artist who playfully explores bright hues but consistently remains honest about the shadows.
