Review of “Love Minus Zero: L’Ecstasy” – Tiga and Hudson Mohawke collaborate on a euphoric track.

Electronic producers Hudson Mohawke from Glasgow and Tiga from Montreal have been releasing collaborative tracks, despite their contrasting styles, since their first track Love Minus Zero in 2020. The title of the track, although also the name of a Bob Dylan song, does not serve as a direct reference point. Despite their differences, the two artists have found a successful partnership, with their mission statement being to create music without apology, cynicism, irony, or winking. Their 16-track collaboration, titled L’Ecstasy, is reminiscent of the popular Skrillex/Fred Again/Four Tet combination dominating the club scene. The album features a mix of both euphoric and more intense tracks, providing a more subdued version of their usual dynamic sounds.

The standout track is In Order 2, which features gothic chords and a theme of heartbreak that is interrupted by a saxophone solo, much to the delight of Wolfgang Tillmans, who also created the album’s artwork. BuyBuySell is another unique and intriguing song that defies genre classification. However, there is nothing lacking in the rubbery techno of Duro, the excellent guest appearances by Channel Tres on Feel the Rush, or Jesse Boykins III on Silence of Love.
