In the year 2024, the popular music artists Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and SZA will be the main acts at the Glastonbury music festival. There will also be a talented group of supporting artists performing from June 26th to June 30th, including Little Simz, LCD Soundsystem, and Burna Boy. The legendary Shania Twain will also be adding to the lively atmosphere in the “legend” slot.
The founder of Glastonbury, Michael Eavis, holds a special affection for Coldplay and has even stated that they are welcome to stop by and help with milking on his farm, which hosts the festival. The band has maintained a strong relationship with the festival and was the first to headline the Pyramid stage five times. Their debut headline performance in 2002, with only one album released at the time, solidified their place in the world of pop-rock. They have since headlined in 2005, 2011, and 2016, and even performed a livestreamed show on the empty Pyramid stage in 2021, as the festival was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2024, Coldplay will be performing exclusively at a European festival as part of their Music of the Spheres world tour. This tour started in March 2022 and has already become the third-highest grossing tour ever, following behind Taylor Swift and Elton John.
Dua Lipa was recently announced to be headlining for her third album, Radical Optimism, following the success of her hit singles Houdini and Training Season. Speaking about her album, she states it was influenced by the concept of gracefully navigating chaos and having the ability to handle any difficult situation – possibly including the unpredictable weather at Glastonbury. It is also informed by the music genres of psychedelia, trip hop, and Britpop.
In 2016, she made her debut performance at Glastonbury. In the following year, she gave a show on the John Peel stage (now Woodsies) that skyrocketed her to fame, drawing a large crowd even in the rain. This year, she has been booked as a rare dance-pop headliner on the Pyramid stage, further showcasing Glastonbury’s support for pop music in recent years with top acts like Beyoncé, Adele, Billie Eilish, and Elton John.
Versatile R&B singer SZA plays Glastonbury for the first time, and her elevation straight to Pyramid headliner status is the latest rung of a remarkable rise. Songs from her 2022 album SOS – an instant R&B classic that charts relationship strife with remarkable detail and depth of feeling – won three Grammys and she was also nominated for song, record, and album of the year; SOS reached No 1 in the US and No 2 in the UK.
Shania Twain will be performing during the highly coveted “legend” slot at Sunday teatime, which has previously hosted renowned artists such as Diana Ross, Kylie Minogue, and Dolly Parton. Twain’s recent UK arena tour was met with great acclaim, with The Guardian praising her two-hour set filled with hit songs, wild western and alien-themed productions, and unwavering confidence. With nine top 10 hits in the UK, including “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” Twain has all the crowd-pleasers necessary for one of Glastonbury’s most beloved performances. During a Radio 2 interview, Twain expressed her excitement for the booking, stating that it feels like a meaningful honor and something that must be earned.
Some of the artists performing on the Pyramid stage are Little Simz, who will play before Coldplay, as well as LCD Soundsystem, Burna Boy, PJ Harvey, Cyndi Lauper, Janelle Monáe, and Michael Kiwanuka. Additionally, the thirteen-member boyband Seventeen will be the first K-pop group to perform on the Pyramid stage.
Idles will take the stage on the second largest Other stage, following the success of their chart-topping album Tangk. They will be joined by Disclosure and the National. The lineup also features UK rap artists D-Block Europe (who recently performed four nights at the O2 Arena in London), Headie One, and the Streets. Attendees can also expect performances from bands such as the Last Dinner Party and Two Door Cinema Club, as well as a diverse range of pop music represented by artists like Camila Cabello, Anne-Marie, and Avril Lavigne.
The latest recipients of the Brit award for top group, Jungle, will be the main act at West Holts, joined by Justice and Jessie Ware. On the stage at Woodsies, the headliners include James Blake, Gossip, and Jamie xx. At the top of the hill on the Park stage, Fontaines DC, Peggy Gou, and London Grammar will take the spotlight, with long-time Glastonbury performers Orbital performing before them.
The lineup, which was revealed later than usual, has finally put an end to months of speculation. It seems that the rumored artists, including Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, will not be taking the stage. However, fans are eagerly anticipating the potential surprise performances from popular Glastonbury acts such as the Killers and Kings of Leon, who currently have gaps in their tour schedules.
The upcoming festival in 2024 marks a significant moment in Glastonbury’s history as two out of the three top headliners are female artists. This is a notable shift from last year’s lineup which consisted entirely of male performers, including Arctic Monkeys, Guns N’ Roses, and Elton John. The decision to book an all-male trio received criticism from certain groups, but festival organizer Emily Eavis defended it by citing a larger issue of gender disparity in the music industry. She also made a commitment to showcasing diversity on the lineup, with almost half of the initial announcement featuring female acts.
Texas frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri backed Eavis, saying on stage at 2023’s festival that the organiser booked women “not because she’s ticking a fucking box to have them on the stages. She’s put us on these stages because she thinks we’re fucking amazing”.
Organizers are planning to reveal additional performers in the upcoming weeks.
