Elton John recently achieved the prestigious status of an Egot, which stands for someone who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award. This accomplishment was solidified by his first Emmy win, making him one of only 19 individuals to achieve this feat.
Elton John’s performance, “Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” was awarded best variety special live at the Los Angeles ceremony on Monday evening. However, the 76-year-old musician was unable to accept the recognition as he was recovering from a knee surgery.
Ben Winston, the producer, accepted the award on stage alongside David Furnish, Elton John’s husband. He expressed his regret that Elton John could not attend due to a knee surgery but assured that he is doing well and sends his love and gratitude to the Television Academy for the prestigious recognition.
“We were aware that this show would be a momentous occasion, as it marked Elton’s final performance in North America on tour. It was also significant as Disney’s inaugural live global stream.”
“We were unaware of the historical significance that would come with winning an award for an individual who has composed the soundtrack to our lives and has made significant contributions to society. This person is a hero to all of us. We never expected it to earn him an EGOT.”
Being an Egot is often called the “grand slam” of the entertainment industry. John is the 19th individual to achieve this, alongside famous names like Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Before John, Viola Davis was the most recent person to attain an Egot, earning a Grammy award last year.
John has received an Emmy award in addition to his five Grammy wins. He also holds two Academy Awards for his songs “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman. Furthermore, he has won a Tony award for his exceptional original score in the musical Aida.
