Two prominent figures in the music scene of Manchester, Liam Gallagher from Oasis and John Squire from the Stone Roses, are hinting at a joint project that is anticipated to be an album drop in 2024.
A recently launched website, gallaghersquire.com, has been announced by Gallagher on his social media platforms. On Instagram, he shared a quote praising John Squire as the top guitarist of his generation and in the world, along with a video of Squire performing with Oasis at the iconic Knebworth concerts in 1996. Squire later made another guest appearance for Gallagher’s solo shows at Knebworth in 2022.
There is limited information available about the collaboration, but it will mark the first new music from Squire since 2016. Squire is most well-known for adding a psychedelic and versatile element to the Stone Roses’ music, with his beautifully chiming riffs in songs like Waterfall, fiery solos in I Am the Resurrection, and funky playing in Fool’s Gold. The band had four singles in the Top 10 and their debut album is considered one of the greatest in Mancunian, and even British, history. After their split in 1996, Squire went on to form the Britpop band the Seahorses, whose only album Do It Yourself reached No 2 on the charts. He also released two solo albums in 2002 and 2004.
Afterwards, he primarily devoted his attention to creating visual art. In 2009, he included the phrase, “I have no intention of disrespecting the legacy of influential Manchester band the Stone Roses,” in one of his artworks. However, the band did reunite in 2011 for some performances and in 2016, they released two new songs. In 2019, Squire stated to the Guardian that the band had disbanded once again.
After Oasis split up in 2009, Gallagher has continued his music career with more longevity. He initially led Beady Eye, a band that put out two albums in 2011 and 2013. He then pursued a solo career, with three of his albums reaching No. 1 on the UK charts. He also released three live albums, two of which also reached No. 1. His most recent studio album, C’Mon You Know, came out in 2022 and included songs co-written by Dave Grohl, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, and pop artist Tove Lo.
Instead of a reunion for Oasis, Gallagher is preparing to perform songs from their first album, Definitely, Maybe, in its entirety during a tour in 2024. This includes a main performance at the Reading and Leeds festivals. Gallagher shared the news of the tour by stating: “This album is undoubtedly the most significant of the 90s. I owe so much to it, and so do you, so let’s commemorate it together.”
Oasis fans have been eagerly anticipating a reunion, despite the ongoing tension between the Gallagher brothers. However, there may be some hope for reconciliation as Liam recently offered an olive branch to Noel after his divorce. In a post on X, Liam expressed his love for his brother and offered support during his current struggles. He also reaffirmed his loyalty to Oasis.
