Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell received the Oscar award for Best Song for What Was I Made For?, a song they jointly wrote for the Barbie movie soundtrack.
Eilish and O’Connell were challenged by a group of songs competing for victory, one of which was another track from Barbie: I’m Just Ken, composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, and sung by Ryan Gosling. Other songs in the running were Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People) from Killers of the Flower Moon, and It Never Went Away from the documentary American Symphony.
“What Was I Made For?” was a chart-topping single in both the UK and Australia, and also reached number 14 on the US charts. The song appears in a scene of the film where Margot Robbie’s character Barbie meets the ghost of her creator, portrayed by Rhea Perlman. It was honored with the awards for best song of the year and best song written for visual media at the February Grammy ceremony.
“I am filled with overwhelming gratitude and privilege,” expressed Eilish, dedicating the accolade to “all those impacted by the film and its incredible impact.”
She expressed gratitude to her closest companion, Zoe, for joining her in playing Barbies, and also acknowledged two music instructors. She recognized that one of them may not have been fond of her, but appreciated that they were skilled in their role.
