Watford has appointed Tom Cleverley as their temporary manager after dismissing Valérien Ismaël following a streak of just one victory in their past 10 league matches.
In May 2023, Ismaël was chosen as the successor of Chris Wilder, making him the 19th full-time manager appointed by the Pozzo family in the span of 11 years. However, due to the team’s recent performance and loss to Coventry on Saturday, there was mounting pressure on Ismaël, leading to the decision to replace him.
Cleverley, the ex-midfielder of Manchester United and England, has transitioned to coaching Watford’s under-18 team. The club has stated that his team will be announced at a later time.
After losing on Saturday, Ismaël expressed his disappointment with yet another defeat at home. The last time his team won in the league was on November 28th at Vicarage Road.
Ismael said: “We took the decision to have a mobile midfield again and had a great start with lots of chances. We should have scored a second goal, but then from nowhere they got the penalty. In the second half we continued to push, but they scored from their only shot on target, so it’s a real pity today.
“We were able to observe a positive energy and dynamic on the field that helped us turn things around in our current situation. While we did have some issues with crosses being too high or too low, and being blocked, at least we made an effort and regained our playing style. Coventry, on the other hand, did not show much today. It seemed to be one of those unlucky days when everything goes wrong.”
