The team manager of Leicester City Women, Willie Kirk, is being investigated for accusations of a romantic involvement with one of their players. As a result, he will not be present on the sidelines for their upcoming match against Liverpool on Saturday.
It is known that Kirk has been placed on suspension while the investigation into the accusations is ongoing.
A representative for Leicester stated that Willie Kirk is helping the club with an internal procedure that will be resolved in the near future. Jennifer Foster, the assistant manager, and Stephen Kirby, the first-team coach, will lead the team for the FA Women’s Cup match against Liverpool on Saturday.
Kirk has been asked to share his thoughts or opinions.
Kirk was appointed as director of football at the Women’s Super League club in July 2022 and appointed manager on 3 November of the same year, taking over from Lydia Bedford.
After being appointed as the coach of Leicester, the 45-year-old inherited a team that had lost six consecutive games without earning any points. However, he was able to turn things around and guide them to a 10th place finish, with 16 points, surpassing Brighton and avoiding relegation for Reading.
Kirk started his career as a senior manager with Hibernian and then briefly worked with the Preston Athletic men’s team before transitioning to managing in the Women’s Super League. He spent three years with Bristol City before joining Manchester United as assistant manager under Casey Stoney.
Kirk departed from his position after six months to take on the role of Everton’s manager in December 2018. However, he was fired following a disappointing start to the 2021-22 season where the team, who were finalists in the 2020 FA Cup, only managed to secure two victories in their first five matches.
Leicester sit seventh in the WSL, having reached 16 points with seven games left to play. They play Liverpool in an FA Cup quarter-final.
