The 26-player roster for the upcoming friendlies against China, selected by interim manager Twila Kilgore of the US women’s national team, does not include World Cup champion Alex Morgan.
Morgan is one of multiple veterans who have been excluded from the roster for the upcoming friendlies on December 2nd and 5th. The team has selected eleven players with 10 caps or less as the United States begins a new phase after a disappointing showing at the 2023 World Cup.
Six members of the World Cup team were excluded from the final roster.
Sofia Huerta, Alyssa Naeher, Ashley Sanchez, Becky Sauerbrunn, Crystal Dunn, Andi Sullivan, and Morgan all played in the team’s recent friendly matches, but have not been chosen for the current squad. US Soccer is aiming to assess a new group of players before the upcoming Olympics. Thirteen of the players selected for Monday’s squad did not participate in the World Cup.
The matches in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, and Frisco, Texas, will be the first since Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was named as the next national team coach. With Hayes not taking over the role until May, the squad was put together by US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker. Hayes and Kilgore were consulted on the formulation of the squad.
According to Kilgore, as we progress to the next stages, it is crucial that we have additional chances to observe our pool of players in the distinctive setting of our national team. This includes both training and games, allowing us to assess their potential contributions for the upcoming Olympics.
Rose Lavelle has returned to the USWNT after not being on the team since the World Cup. Tierna Davidson and Abby Dahlkemper, experienced defenders, have also made a comeback.
The roster included two players who had not yet represented their country: midfielder Korbin Albert from Paris Saint-Germain and midfielder Jenna Nighswonger from NJ/NY Gotham. Nighswonger, who played in 20 matches for the reigning champions, was recognized as the NWSL Rookie of the Year.
Our organization highly regards the players who have recently participated in camps or the World Cup but were not selected for this roster. They are still considered part of our group, and we recognize their contributions on and off the field. However, we also recognize the importance of continually assessing and developing players in the appropriate manner in order to give our team the greatest potential for success. Kilgore stated, “We must strike a balance between valuing our experienced players and nurturing new talent.”
The USWNT’s last matches of 2023 will be against China. China is the second most frequent opponent in US soccer history, following Canada. The two teams have faced each other 58 times in the past.
