Erik ten Hag has stated that Antony’s lackluster performance can be attributed to off-field problems. The footballer from Manchester United has been alleged of multiple instances of violence towards women, although he denies all of them.
Antony has not yet scored a goal or made an assist in 21 games this season. Due to his performance, the manager has benched him on multiple occasions.
Ten Hag stated that the reason for the player’s lackluster performance is due to his personal problems affecting his ability to play well. The first year was decent, the pre-season for this season was good, and the first four games were impressive. However, when the player returned from an absence, he did not meet the expected level of performance and has the potential to do much better.
Ten Hag previously coached Antony at Ajax and brought him to United for an initial £82m. “I look back there: his effectiveness, end product was higher and also in the Champions League very high,” he said. “He’s capable of doing this – key actions, key passes, the crosses, the finishing. It’s very high and should return to that level but Premier League is more difficult and he’s capable of doing that.
“It has clearly affected him and left an impact, so he must handle it. He created the problems and now must resolve them, while also improving his performance on the field.”
Gabriela Cavallin, Antony’s previous partner, has made several allegations that are currently under investigation by the Greater Manchester police. Another woman, Ingrid Lana, has also come forward with accusations against him regarding a meeting in Manchester.
The specific allegations being investigated by GMP are currently unknown, but Antony has denied all of them in an interview on Brazilian television. It is believed that investigations by both UK and Brazilian police are still ongoing.
Ten Hag was questioned about the recent return of Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund on a loan basis. This comes after the player was excluded by the manager for not apologizing for accusing him of dishonesty.
Ten Hag expressed his well wishes for Sancho’s success and stated that he hopes he is doing well. When asked about what Sancho needs to do at Dortmund in order to return to United’s team, Ten Hag simply replied that he had already answered the question.
Ten Hag, who has forecasted better outcomes when his list of injured players is reduced, mentioned that Antony, Lisandro Martínez, Casemiro, Luke Shaw, Christian Eriksen, and Amad Diallo are all possible options for the upcoming match against Tottenham at home on Sunday.
