Gemma Grainger has resigned from her position as Wales’ manager and will now serve as head coach for Norway.
For nearly three years, the 41-year-old was in control of the Wales team and led them close to qualifying for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. However, they ultimately missed out on a spot in the tournament when they were defeated by Switzerland in the playoff final due to a last-minute goal.
Grainger informed the official website of the Football Association of Wales, saying, “For the past three years, I have dedicated myself completely to our journey and I will always be thankful for the chance to work with this team and represent our proud nation. It has been a privilege to collaborate with this group of players and staff, and to represent a country that has shown unwavering support and enthusiasm for the team.”
I did not plan on leaving Cymru, but I was presented with an unexpected opportunity that I could not reject. It was a challenging journey to reach this point. Please know that the decision to leave was not made lightly.
“I have full confidence in this team’s ability to advance and qualify. I am certain that they will continue to progress and develop from this point on. Cymru will always hold a special place in my heart, thank you for everything.”
The ex-Leeds and Middlesbrough coach previously led England’s youth teams and became the manager of Wales in March 2021. Her last game as head coach ended in a goalless tie against Germany in the Nations League, held in Swansea in December.
The CEO of FAW, Noel Mooney, expressed his thanks for Gemma’s accomplishments as the manager of Cymru’s national team. We are pleased with the progress made under Gemma’s leadership and now we are beginning the search for a new manager who will help us qualify for both Uefa Euro 2025 and the 2027 Fifa World Cup.
