Hayden Hackney’s goal secures Middlesbrough’s advantage over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea supporters likely did not anticipate their high-priced team to be dominated by a right-wing player who only cost Middlesbrough a small amount when he moved up from Tooting and Mitcham five years prior.

Isaiah Jones is a unique talent who not only disrupted Levi Colwill, but also assisted Hayden Hackney in scoring a goal that brought joy to the Riverside as if it was 2004.

The victory tonight puts Michael Carrick’s team, currently in the middle of the Championship standings, in a good position for the second leg of the semi-final at Stamford Bridge in two weeks. This lead could be crucial for their chances.

While Mauricio Pochettino’s underperforming Premier League team is still expected to advance, Boro’s chances of replicating their success from 20 years ago and following in the footsteps of Steve McClaren’s 2004 team by winning the League Cup are not completely gone. Chelsea would be foolish to overlook Jones, as well as midfielder Dan Barlaser and his teammates from Hackney, for a second time.

Pochettino, whose midfield cost over £200 million, found it challenging to discuss their performance. On this particular night, Cole Palmer missed three opportunities for a hat-trick and veteran defender Thiago Silva was seen arguing with displeased Chelsea fans who booed the team off the field at the end of the game.

“We committed errors and faced consequences. Despite creating significant opportunities, Middlesbrough’s playstyle of countering with a strong defensive block made it challenging for us to score; our finishing was not precise enough. However, this is only the first half of the match. We must maintain a positive mindset and strive for victory in the final. Naturally, I am disappointed, but as a young team, we must use this as a learning experience.”

Chelsea came without 10 key players who were injured, while their opponents had 12 players missing. Additionally, Teesside’s list of injured players grew when Emmanuel Latte Lath had to be assisted off the field after just five minutes.

The top scorer for Carrick’s team was injured by a controversial, possibly penalty-worthy tackle from Axel Disasi. This happened after intercepting Colwill’s hasty header and nearly scoring in the first minute.

When the home left-wing back Alex Bangura then hobbled off in the 20th minute, fortune seemed to be frowning on Boro. Yet in an unexpected silver lining Carrick switched from a back three to a back four and, albeit inadvertently, that revamp proved pivotal.

Jones, much to Colwill’s discomfort, became the primary recipient as he transformed from a wing-back to a right-winger. This caused his opponent to feel unsettled and worried. When Chelsea’s left-back received a yellow card for fouling Jones in the 30th minute, Middlesbrough saw an opportunity.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher shoots at goal against Middlesbrough.

Boro managed to hold their own thanks to Barlaser’s effective through passes, but they were on edge as Carrick’s backup goalkeeper, Tom Glover, nervously punched the ball before Conor Gallagher’s volley went over the bar.

Pochettino chose not to use a traditional center forward, instead giving that position to Palmer and having Gallagher support him with his aggressive play.

Jonny Howson’s blunder gave Palmer an opportunity to score first, but he missed the shot with his left foot.

Shortly after, Hackney responded with a shot that narrowly missed its mark. Little did Chelsea realize, this was just a warm-up for what was to come as Hackney later propelled Boro ahead.

Colwill was unable to respond to Jones’s sudden acceleration after receiving a superb pass from Barlaser. Jones effortlessly outsmarted his defender and delivered a low cross to Hackney, who calmly side-footed the ball into the net from the edge of the six-yard box, giving Boro the lead in the 37th minute.

Jones made a point of mentioning that Colwill is primarily a central defender, which was a significant moment for Hackney, a native of Redcar who joined Boro’s academy at the young age of nine.

Palmer had the opportunity to equalize before halftime, however, when Glover was unable to secure Enzo Fernández’s 25-yard shot, Palmer’s volley from close range went over the bar instead.

Chelsea tried to intensify their pressure in the second half, but Carrick seemed pleased with the amount of interceptions made by a Championship team that struck a perfect balance between strategic thinking and intense dedication.

However, Boro’s gameplay was risky at times. When Malo Gusto made a cross and Gallagher’s sudden change of direction caught Dael Fry off guard, it seemed like an equalizer was on the horizon. However, Gallagher missed his shot and Pochettino made the decision to bring in more attacking players.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Armando Broja entered the game in place of Fernández and the consistently dangerous Noni Madueke. Pochettino’s choice to substitute Madueke instead of the less impactful Raheem Sterling caused confusion.

The new players assisted Chelsea in their efforts to score an equalizing goal, but the Boro team, who were only four points away from a spot in the second-tier playoffs, defended impressively and even had chances to counterattack.

Carrick expressed his pride and described the victory as a special moment. The team had to overcome challenges to secure the win against a tough opponent like Chelsea. The night was a success and the players were exceptional. However, they must stay focused as the second leg will bring new challenges. They are aware of the difficult task ahead.
