Despite potential issues with bolts, panels, and ball bearings, Liverpool’s Premier League season remains on track. In their recent 4-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium, there were concerns over injuries to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota, followed by Darwin Núñez at half-time.

Three more names to add to that ever-lengthening sick list; and in Núñez, in particular, a player Jürgen Klopp and his team really won’t want to lose right now.

Núñez has trodden a fascinating path across his 18 months at Anfield, from new hope to online snark target, to his status now as Lord of Misrule, an increasingly potent force of happy attacking chaos. There may be shanks and bobbles and scuffs along the way, but the fact remains the last time Liverpool lost with Núñez in the starting XI was Real Madrid in March last year.

He continues to be a crucial factor in Liverpool’s position as the top scoring team in the league. Despite facing numerous injuries, the team consistently displays the ability to score in various methods, thanks to him.

Núñez was the one who made a significant impact in the game here, breaking through after a somewhat unclear initial 20 minutes. He played a crucial role as a lone, direct player on the football field. Both of Liverpool’s first and third goals had a nostalgic charm to them, following the tactics of wing commander Charles Reep and the POMO playbook. The strategy was to send long passes, utilize space, and pounce on the second ball. The key was to catch the opposing team off guard and quickly break through. And above all, feed the ball to Darwin.

After 35 minutes had passed, Núñez’s performance in the game was not off to a good start. He continuously ran in the opposite direction of the game, making all the correct moves but not in the right sequence. However, halfway through the first half, he changed his approach and aggressively tried to break through the game’s obstacles.

After a deep pass, chaos ensued as Núñez had multiple opportunities to score. This resulted in the first goal, which gave Liverpool an advantage for the rest of the game.

A long pass from Mark Flekken was sent down the middle of the field by Virgil van Dijk. Jota was able to head it on to Núñez, who was already running towards the goal. Despite having time to contemplate the fragility of life, Núñez remained composed and executed a perfect finish by chipping the ball over Flekken in a graceful arc.

In his last 11 games, he has scored six goals and assisted four. It is safe to say that Núñez has been the driving force of Liverpool’s offense, stepping up in the absence of Mohamed Salah without any setbacks or hesitation.

It is uncommon to see such progress, to find stability and assert your determination after a challenging beginning. For many days, Núñez appeared to be wandering aimlessly on the field like a mischievous labrador, enthusiastic but constantly in the wrong spot, chewing on your slippers, knocking over the tea tray, and drinking from the toilet.

It could have been simple to retreat, to avoid putting yourself in the spotlight, to control that overwhelming energy. However, Núñez’s greatest attribute is his persistent determination, as he never gives up, won’t accept a refusal, and will be ready at 4am each night to play frisbee in the park.

It was Jota’s departure that led to an early return for Salah. He made Liverpool’s second for Alexis Mac Allister, then scored the third himself from another piece of direct play. This time Caoimhín Kelleher punted the ball long, Cody Gakpo flicked it on and Salah went skittering in to take the loose ball, then poke it back across into the far corner.

Salah’s impressive speed and agility were evident in his graceful finish, as seen in Nathan Collins’s attempts to keep up with him.

Liverpool had several positive aspects going for them. Conor Bradley returned and showed his usual bright and fearless nature. He also received support from the away fans, who sang his name with added sentiment due to recent events. Football can feel like a peaceful environment at times. The best part is that despite missing players, Salah’s comeback brings the possibility of a reunion with Darwin in the final portion of the season, assuming he remains fit. Put the pieces back together. Keep things moving. Overall, it promises to be an enjoyable spectacle to witness.
