André Onana is concerned that taking part in the Afcon trip may result in him losing his position as the top goalkeeper for Manchester United.

André Onana is worried that participating in the Africa Cup of Nations may result in him losing his position as Manchester United’s starting goalkeeper.

The player from Cameroon is expected to participate in the tournament taking place from January 13th to February 11th in Ivory Coast. As a result, he may not be able to play in four Premier League games. Onana previously retired from international soccer due to a conflict with the Cameroon team’s coach, Rigobert Song, during the 2022 World Cup. However, he has now changed his mind and is willing to play for his country again.

Onana was responsible for two of Galatasaray’s goals in United’s 3-3 tie in the Champions League on Wednesday. He has appeared in every match for United this season, including the Carabao Cup, but there is mounting criticism on him following his recent errors.

United bought Altay Bayindir in the summer from Fenerbahce to be Onana’s deputy and the 25-year-old would get an opportunity to prove his worth to Erik ten Hag if Onana goes to Afcon. Tom Heaton is the third-choice goalkeeper.

Ten Hag expressed satisfaction with the group of goalkeepers, praising André, Altay, and Tom for their strong performances and their ability to push each other. Altay, who has recently joined the team from Turkey, is adjusting to the demands of the Premier League and European football. However, Ten Hag is pleased with his progress and believes that with patience and hard work, Altay will have the opportunity to prove himself and make the most of it.

Bruno Fernandes, the captain of United, commented on Onana’s mistakes against Galatasaray, stating that Onana is capable of handling these situations as he has done so in the past. Mistakes happen and everyone, including Onana, knows that they need to improve in order for the team to achieve a positive outcome. The team’s poor result cannot be solely attributed to Onana, as each individual must take responsibility for their actions. Fernandes takes responsibility for his own performance and acknowledges that the team as a whole needs to improve.
