Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, which has become Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film, a third installment of the Top Gun franchise is currently in production.
According to Puck, Ehren Kruger, co-writer of Top Gun: Maverick, is currently working on a script for the movie. The goal is to bring together Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell, who all starred in the original Maverick. Although there is no director confirmed yet, Puck suggests that Joseph Kosinski, director of Maverick, may also be involved in a producing role.
Featuring Cruise as navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, now mentor for a new generation of fighter pilots including Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller) and Jake “Hangman” Seresin (Powell), Top Gun: Maverick was a belated sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, and amassed more than $1.49bn in box office revenue worldwide to become Cruise’s best performing film. Mission: Impossible – Fallout, released in 2018, had previously been the actor’s most successful with $791.1m.
The announcement is made amidst negotiations between major studios over Cruise’s career. Warner Bros revealed on Tuesday that they have entered a non-exclusive partnership with Cruise to collaborate on creating and releasing both new and established films. However, the rights to Top Gun still belong to Paramount, who will be in charge of the third installment of the franchise, which is expected to be Cruise’s next project. Paramount also has control over the Mission: Impossible series, which has been postponed due to the Covid outbreak. The eighth film, titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, is set to hit theaters in May 2025.
