The initial preview for the revival of the franchise, Alien: Romulus, guarantees a nostalgic revival of the legendary science fiction horror saga.

The movie is directed by Fede Álvarez, known for Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead. However, it still has the original director, Ridley Scott, on board as a producer, and James Cameron, director of Aliens, is acting as an unofficial advisor.

Initially planned for release exclusively on Hulu, following in the footsteps of the Predator prequel “Prey”, “Alien: Romulus” will now be hitting theaters this summer, with rising star Cailee Spaeny of “Priscilla” fame leading a talented ensemble of young actors.

The story takes place between Alien and Aliens and revolves around a team of young space settlers who explore a deserted space station for resources. According to Álvarez in an interview with Variety, the goal was to not only capture the aesthetics of the original films, but also the essence of the genre. The focus was to bring back the intense horror of the first film while incorporating the suspenseful elements of Aliens and Alien 3. The team went to great lengths to stay true to the filmmaking techniques of the original movie.

After reading the script, Scott described it as “totally unlike the other films.” Álvarez shared with the Hollywood Reporter that Scott had been impressed after watching the film without any visual effects, stating it was “excellent.”

Cameron was also someone who became an important part of the process. “He’s now seen the movie and loved it,” Álvarez said. “It’s also fascinating because [Cameron and Scott’s] notes and comments are completely different … They were all super smart comments, notes and thoughts on the film and the film-making, etc, but both of them have completely different approaches.”

The movie also features David Jonsson from Industry and Isabela Merced from Madame Web.

Noah Hawley, creator of Fargo, is currently working on a TV show set in the Alien universe, which takes place thirty years prior to the first film and involves Ridley Scott.

The Alien series has earned more than $1.6 billion worldwide.

The new film “Alien: Romulus” is set to come out on August 16th.
