The chefs at the Oscars provide edible awards. The Golden Globes should follow suit.

Although it may seem far off, it’s important to start thinking about 2024 now. One upcoming event to be aware of is the Golden Globes, which will take place on January 7th. A team of people are currently working hard to ensure its success.

An announcement was made this week revealing the menu for the Golden Globes guests. The unique culinary experience promises to revolutionize the traditional award show menu and will feature dishes from Nobu, including sashimi salad and assorted nigiri. However, aside from black cod miso, the main offering is sushi.

There is a risk involved, as the Golden Globes have established themselves as the more relaxed and chaotic counterpart to the Oscars. Alcohol is consumed at this event, and it is likely that many attendees have not eaten enough. Can something as light as sushi effectively absorb the alcohol? While it does contain rice, it may not be enough. There will most likely be chaos, as I predict. However, that was not the case last year when the inebriated actors were able to line their stomachs with risotto. In 2014, the Globes attempted to mitigate this issue by providing each guest with a small piece of pita bread. This shows a level of practicality that seems to be lacking this year.

The Golden Globes may be struggling to keep pace with the Oscars, which have been leading the way in this regard. The event started off modestly (with chicken on toast as the main dish), but then went through a long period of serving traditional British fare (such as ham and melon, pate, and beef and mushroom dishes) before celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck took over almost thirty years ago. Puck initially faced challenges in finding the right menu, offering steak, lamb chops, and pizza in his first few years. However, celebrities still managed to persuade him to cook whatever they desired. In 2012, Puck shared that Barbra Streisand requested a chicken pot pie and Tom Cruise asked for steak.

It may seem like a daunting task to cater to the desires of numerous renowned individuals, each vying for superiority over their peers, but this may have been what inspired Puck’s ingenious idea. The Academy Awards are referred to as the Oscars because they award Oscar statues, so Puck decided to take this concept further by shaping every dish to resemble an Oscar. In 2004, Puck introduced his new approach with a delectable Oscar-shaped cookie for guests to savor. This was followed by smoked salmon slices and flatbreads also shaped like Oscars. Puck’s obsession with creating as many Oscar-shaped food items as possible has continued, with additions such as pudding and small chocolate Oscars brushed with gold dust.

These individuals deserve this. The quality of the food is irrelevant. The crucial aspect is that it resembles a group of small soldiers, satisfying the two goals of a) being visually appealing on Instagram and b) making the regular-sized actors feel like powerful and larger-than-life beings in comparison. This sensation cannot be attained with sushi alone.

It’s amazing that it would be so simple to create food that resembles a Golden Globe. Since a Golden Globe is essentially just a round object on a pedestal, almost any type of food could easily be shaped to resemble it. For example, a sausage standing upright with a satsuma placed on top, a churro balancing an arancina (or arancinu) depending on one’s dialect, an olive inserted into a piece of liquorice, or an onion on a Mars bar.

The main issue is that I should not have to come up with these ideas for the Golden Globes. The event just barely survived its latest controversy and continues to fall behind the Oscars each year. Does it believe that serving sushi will solve everything? Regular sushi, which is not even a suitable combination of shapes? Definitely not.

Step up your game for the next Golden Globes.
