Oppenheimer and Barbie are the top winners at the Critics Choice awards, building momentum for the upcoming Oscars.

Barbie and Oppenheimer, two blockbuster films that are constantly linked, have emerged as big winners at the Critics Choice awards. This indicates that both movies are gaining traction as the Academy Awards approach. Combined, they received a total of 14 awards, with Oppenheimer slightly surpassing Barbie with a score of 8 to 6.

Oppenheimer dominated the headline awards, winning best picture, best director for Christopher Nolan and best acting ensemble, with Robert Downey Jr also picking up best supporting actor for his role as Atomic Energy Commission member Lewis Strauss. The film also won a number of craft awards, including best cinematography, editing and visual effects.

Despite not winning the best picture award, Barbie achieved several victories, including best comedy, best original screenplay, and best song for “I’m Just Ken.”

The winners of the lead acting awards were somewhat unexpected, as Paul Giamatti defeated Cillian Murphy for “The Holdovers” and Emma Stone beat out Lily Gladstone for “Poor Things” instead of “Killers of the Flower Moon”. Unlike the Golden Globes, where actors can win in separate categories for drama and comedy/musical, the Critics Choice presents a direct competition, hinting that Giamatti and Stone may have gained an advantage in the Oscars race.

The TV awards mirrored the Golden Globes, with Beef, The Bear, and Succession taking home the most wins. Succession’s Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won for best actor and actress, as did The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, and Beef’s Steven Yeun and Ali Wong.

The Critics Choice Association, the largest group in the US and Canada, presents the awards and the ceremony was hosted by Chelsea Handler.
