Dakota Johnson has shared her thoughts on the unsuccessful reception of the superhero film “Madame Web,” stating that she most likely will not pursue a similar project in the future.
The lead role in Sony’s recent venture to expand the Spider-Man universe was portrayed by the actor, but the film received negative feedback and did not perform well at the box office. It currently holds a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has earned a total of $91 million worldwide, while approximately $80 million was spent on production costs.
During an interview with Bustle, the actress was questioned about her reaction to “nasty” reviews. She replied, “I am not shocked that things have turned out this way.”
According to Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times, it is one of the most poorly made comic book films he has ever watched. David Fear of Rolling Stone compared it to “Cats: The Movie” in the superhero movie genre.
Johnson said they had never attempted anything like it previously. They doubted they would do it again as it was not a world they thrived in. In the entertainment industry, one signs onto a project expecting one thing, and it can end up being something entirely different while in the process of creating it. This can be confusing, but it was a valuable lesson. Though it is not pleasant to be involved in something heavily criticized, Johnson can empathize and acknowledge the complexities of the situation.
Johnson also made light of the potential portrayal of her comments. She quipped, “It would probably be something like, ‘Dakota Johnson Finally Speaks Out About Madame Web’s Disappointing Box Office Numbers.'” She clarified, “But I’m not actually breaking any silence, I’m simply sharing my thoughts.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony executives were feeling pessimistic about the failure of the film, which had been planned to kickstart a new franchise. The studio is now placing its hopes on its upcoming joint venture with Marvel, Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, set to release in August.
The lackluster reception of Madame Web is yet another blow for the superhero genre, following the disappointment of Shazam 2, The Marvels, and The Flash both in terms of critical reviews and audience interest.
Johnson will next be seen in the two-person drama Daddio alongside Sean Penn and is set to lead Celine Song’s follow-up to Past Lives, the romantic comedy The Materialists.
