Aubrey Plaza is set to star in the first film directed by John Waters in two decades.

According to reports, John Waters, the director of Hairspray, will soon begin filming his first feature in 20 years. The lead role is set to be played by Aubrey Plaza.

As per World of Reel, Plaza, known for her roles in Emily the Criminal and The White Lotus, has officially joined the cast of Waters’ upcoming film Liarmouth, which is based on his own novel released in 2022. Filming is scheduled to commence in Baltimore, Maryland, where Waters resides and often sets his films.

Known as “A Feel-Bad Romance” and labeled by its creators as a “hilariously dirty story of sexual exploits, criminal activity, and dysfunctional family dynamics”, Liarmouth follows the story of Marsha Sprinkle, a con artist and pathological liar who breaks up with her partner Daryl and steals from her own daughter and mother. The release of the project was initially planned for 2022, but it seems to have been postponed due to the strikes of the writers and actors.

In 2004, Waters’ final film as director was the movie A Dirty Shame. Unfortunately, it was not well-received. The movie starred Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville, and Selma Blair. In 2009, Waters’ planned project, a Christmas film for children titled Fruitcake, was cancelled due to financial issues. However, his popularity was boosted by a successful Broadway production of Hairspray, a musical about teenage rock and roll released in 1988. This success led to a film adaptation in 2007, starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Waters made his name on the “midnight movie” circuit in the 1970s with outrageously transgressive films such as Pink Flamingos and Polyester, made with a regular cast of collaborators including Divine, Mink Stole and Cookie Mueller, before moving into the mainstream with Hairspray, Cry-Baby (starring Johnny Depp) and Serial Mom.
