It has been rumored for years, but it is now reported that a new follow-up to the popular zombie thriller 28 Days Later is in the making. This comes twenty years after the release of the original film in 2002.
The movie “28 Years Later” is the third installment in the series, following “28 Days Later” and the sequel “28 Weeks Later” released in 2007. This new film will bring together director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, who previously collaborated on the first film and then worked as executive producers on the second.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming movie will mark the start of a new trilogy. Insider sources have revealed that the production will be presented to various studios, streaming services, and other interested parties sometime this week.
Boyle is set to direct the movie “28 Years Later” and Garland will be writing all three films.
The budget for each movie is approximately $75 million, significantly higher than the $8 million budget of 28 Days Later. Released in 2002, the film received widespread acclaim and surpassed expectations at the box office, also propelling its lead actor, Cillian Murphy, to stardom.
At the time, Murphy was not well-known and he portrayed a bicycle delivery person who regains consciousness in a post-apocalyptic United Kingdom where a virus has transformed people into violent attackers.
The movie, described by The Guardian as “powerful and masculine,” is widely recognized for reviving the zombie horror genre and popularizing the portrayal of zombies as quick and frightening attackers instead of lifeless corpses.
Rumors of the third installment of the franchise have been circulating since 2007.
“In the years following the release of 28 Weeks Later, Boyle proposed an idea for a new installment,” stated Boyle. In the past decade, both Garland and Murphy, along with co-star Imogen Poots, have also shown interest in the project. However, there are currently no actors attached to the upcoming film.
“I always bring up running into Danny or Alex whenever it happens,” Murphy stated in an interview with NME in 2022. “It’s incredible that a film that’s 20 years old still holds up so well.”
