A feature film is in the works based on the memoir written by Mathew Knowles, father of Beyoncé.

A biographical account written by Mathew Knowles, the father of Beyoncé Knowles, will be adapted into a movie, chronicling his time as a young activist during his student years.

Variety reported that Knowles’ book, “Racism from the Eyes of a Child,” published in 2017, is currently being adapted into a film and a potential TV series. The book recounts Knowles’ experiences growing up in Alabama before the civil rights movement, where he attended primarily white schools and faced various forms of discrimination and abuse. He has described enduring physical and emotional trauma, including being beaten, shocked with electricity, and humiliated. Knowles is a graduate of Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville.

The movie will focus on the initial portion of the novel, which features influential leaders in the civil rights movement such as Martin Luther King Jr, Albert Turner, Ralph Abernathy, and Coretta Scott King. Knowles, who spoke with Variety, expressed how these individuals were a source of pride for him.

The current project seems distinct from The Mathew Knowles Story, which was announced in 2022 after Knowles sold his Music World Entertainment Group to investment company APX Capital. The Mathew Knowles Story is being touted as a “King Richard-style origin story” about Knowles’ guidance of his daughters Beyoncé and Solange’s music careers, including Beyoncé’s success with Destiny’s Child. Knowles served as Beyoncé’s manager until 2011, when they parted ways in a “mutual decision”.
