Katie Melua, aged 39, was born in Georgia and moved to the UK as a child. She attended the Brit School in south London. Her first two albums were both number one in the UK and she had popular singles such as The Closest Thing to Crazy and Nine Million Bicycles. By the time her third album, Pictures, was released in 2007, she had become the top-selling female artist based in the UK. Her ninth studio album, Love & Money, was released in March, and this month marks the 20th anniversary of her debut album, Call Off the Search, with a special edition release. She currently resides in London with her partner and their child.
What is the thing that scares you the most?
When I witness older generations having difficulty with technology, I fear its rapid advancement may render me unable to utilize it.
What is the quality you dislike the most about yourself?
I am easily distracted by various things, causing me to finish all of my projects right before their deadlines. At times, this can be a bit stressful.
Can you tell me about a time when you were really embarrassed?
Two days after delivering my child, I mistakenly shared a picture of another baby to a WhatsApp group, believing it was my own son (they bore a resemblance). Embarrassing.
What is your most valued possession?
My travel document. As a person who grew up in post-Soviet Union and moved to the United Kingdom, the British passport still holds significance to me.
Describe yourself in three words
Living a fairytale.
What is your least favorite aspect of your physical appearance?
I wish I were a little taller or had longer limbs. I have to shorten the sleeves and pants on all my clothing because I am 155cm (5ft 1in).
If you had the ability to revive something that is no longer living, what would you pick?
Unfortunately, my previous psychiatrist passed away by suicide last year. I deeply wish he could return, as he was an exceptional doctor who played a crucial role in saving my life. In 2010, I spent six weeks in a mental health facility under his care.
Who is the famous person you have a romantic interest in?
Freddie Mercury.
What is the most negative remark you’ve ever received from someone?
“Your songwriting skills need improvement.” This was a comment from a collaborator during my early 20s. It ultimately led me to dedicate a significant amount of time to studying and honing my lyric writing abilities.
What is your most shameless indulgence?
Each quarter, I plan to visit a greasy fast food restaurant by myself and enjoy a meal.
Who would you like to apologize to the most, and for what reason?
Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away a few years ago, as I was unable to visit her during my last trip to Georgia.
What changes would you make if you could go back and edit your past?
I wish I had celebrated more in my twenties.

I nearly wept last night due to my lack of sleep.

Knowing everyone I love is always going to be healthy.
What occurs after we pass away?
I am very inquisitive. We had a baptism for my son because there is a chance of a higher power, but my partner is a science educator, so I am also receptive to the idea that there may be no afterlife.
