The French Open has experienced a significant surprise with the elimination of world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the first round on Tuesday by Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild.
The player ranked 172nd in the world remained calm and defeated Medvedev in an exciting match that went five sets, with a final score of 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 2-6 6-3 6-4, after over four hours on the court.
Medvedev’s performance on clay is not his strongest, but he arrived at Roland Garros after securing his first clay-court title at the Italian Open this year.
Many people anticipated that he would defeat Seyboth Wild, who was competing in his first grand slam main draw. However, the Brazilian surprised everyone by aggressively controlling the match with his strong forehand despite the challenging wind.
“I have been following Daniil’s career since I was a junior player, and today I had the opportunity to play against him on this court. It’s a dream come true to beat such a skilled player,” said 23-year-old Seyboth Wild during his on-court interview.
“When I stepped onto the court, my main goal was to reach the net frequently and utilize my forehand against my opponent’s. This strategy proved to be successful.”
After winning the first set, Seyboth Wild failed to convert set points in the second, giving Medvedev an opportunity to gain momentum in the game.
After easily winning the third set, the Russian player continued to struggle with maintaining his performance and showed visible frustration.
The Brazilian was given the opportunity to regain strength and bring the match to an intense final set. He maintained composure and ultimately secured a memorable victory on Philippe Chatrier.
After securing victory with a powerful forehand, the ecstatic Brazilian looked to the audience in shock and then lifted his arms up high.
“It was a challenging match. I began to experience cramps in the second set. I gave my all and focused on playing my best tennis, which paid off,” Seyboth Wild stated. “I am extremely pleased with my performance.”
He is set to compete against either Quentin Halys or Guido Pella in the second round.
