The French Open has experienced a significant surprise with the elimination of world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the first round on Tuesday by Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild.
The player ranked 172nd in the world remained calm and defeated Medvedev in an exciting match that went five sets, with a final score of 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 2-6 6-3 6-4, after over four hours on the court.
Medvedev’s performance on clay is not his strongest, but he arrived at Roland Garros after securing his first clay-court title at the Italian Open this year.
Many people anticipated that he would defeat Seyboth Wild, who was competing in his first grand slam main draw. However, the Brazilian surprised everyone by aggressively controlling the match with his strong forehand despite the challenging wind.
“I have been following Daniil’s career since I was a junior player, and today I had the opportunity to play against him on this court. It’s a dream come true to beat such a skilled player,” said 23-year-old Seyboth Wild during his on-court interview.
