In anticipation of his national team’s upcoming friendly against Spain, Vinícius, who has been playing in Spain since 2018, expressed his desire to focus on football. However, he admits to feeling discouraged and less motivated due to obstacles. He firmly states that leaving Spain is not an option because it would only appease those who hold racist beliefs.
Vinícius has faced ten instances of racist mistreatment, which have been brought to the attention of prosecutors by the La Liga. He struggled to express himself at a press conference in Madrid and had to take breaks to gather himself.
I will not leave because it allows those who hold racist beliefs to see me consistently. As a fearless member of Real Madrid, we have achieved numerous victories that may not be well-received by certain individuals. Brazil and Spain will meet in a friendly match at Santiago Bernabéu in support of the “One Skin” anti-racism movement.
The player, whose shot that bounced back helped Endrick score the winning goal for Brazil against England at Wembley on Saturday, expressed feeling honored to support this significant cause. He also stated, “I will remain here, representing the greatest club in the world, scoring goals, and achieving titles. And people will have to continue seeing my face for a prolonged period.”
Earlier, Dani Carvajal, who plays for Madrid alongside Vinícius, addressed the issue of racism in Spanish football. Despite recent events, the Spanish full-back still believes that Spain is not a racist country. He highlights the high level of integration in the country, mentioning his own background growing up in a diverse neighborhood in Leganés and having friends of various nationalities and skin colors.
Unfortunately, there are individuals who attend football matches simply to channel their rage and anger. It is even more troubling when their actions result in harm to others. These types of individuals should not be permitted in a stadium, as it is the most unsightly aspect of the sport.
Dorival Júnior, the coach of the Brazilian national team, recently discussed the situation of Vinícius with the Guardian. He stated that with appropriate efforts from the police, it should be feasible to identify the individuals responsible. He noted that in Brazil, many individuals experience suffering on a daily basis, but are unable to speak out due to the lack of effectiveness and competence of the government.
Fellow Brazil international Rodrygo, also of Real Madrid, told the Guardian he had previously sued social media abusers and advocated tough punishments for the abuse that has become especially prevalent at Madrid’s away matches. “When they start punishing [people], things will change,” said the forward. “But as long as there is no punishment, it will continue. As soon as they start punishing people I think a lot will change.”
