Carrie Brownstein on aliens, sandwiches and bad outfits: ‘Big hats are my most recurring fashion crime’

If you were to have a sandwich named after you, what ingredients would be included?

“I enjoyed a sweet sandwich made with peanut butter, banana, honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon before we began our conversation. I tend to have at least one peanut butter sandwich daily when I’m on the go or busy with work. It’s a great source of protein.”

What is your preferred guitar?

Around 2000, I purchased a 1972 Gibson SG in walnut brown in Tacoma, Washington. Prior to that, I had only played an imitation Epiphone SG and then switched to Rickenbackers, but I desired an authentic 1970s Gibson SG.

I apologize if this is too technical, but there was a time period in Gibson’s history known as the Norlin era. It is believed that guitar production during this time was not as consistent and sound quality may have been less reliable compared to other eras. However, my guitar happens to be from the Norlin era and it still has a fantastic sound. I appreciate its slim neck because I do not have large hands. I have a lot of affection for this guitar and it is my go-to choice. I used it for recording many songs, including “Little Rope.”

What is the most valuable advice you have been given?

Be patient. Sometimes, there may be things that seem concerning and permanent in the present moment – however, after waiting for six months, they no longer hold significance. You may get caught up in emotions like anger, envy, or confusion, but if you remain steadfast, these things will eventually lose their importance.

In the past, you have referred to Australia as the special place for Sleater-Kinney. What is the most quintessentially Australian experience you have had?

Is it possible to have a romantic relationship with an Australian? That may sound inappropriate – as if I am claiming to have actually “done” an Australian, which in a way I have. However, I am deeply immersed in Australian culture.

What is the worst fashion mistake you have made so far?

I have a habit of what I refer to as a “tour ensemble.” When I travel to places like Mexico or Marfa, Texas, I often find myself purchasing a large cowboy hat thinking it looks fantastic on me. I end up wearing it for the entire trip and it appears in every photo. However, upon returning home, I am embarrassed by my fashion choice.

It feels like a scene from a scary movie when I open my closet and find a hat that seems to have been placed by someone unknown. I am left wondering what this awful article of clothing is. In that moment, it looks absurd and fake and I feel compelled to get rid of it. Therefore, I must confess that large hats are my most frequent fashion mistake.

What is your strategy when you are unable to fall asleep?

I enjoy listening to podcasts and audiobooks, as long as the speaker has a soothing and pleasant voice. Jon Ronson is one of my favorites, with his excellent voice that is known for its gentle and calming qualities. It has a smooth and gentle tone without any sharpness, giving it a soft and almost beautiful quality.

Do you have faith in the existence of alien life?

I desire to. In my opinion, it is egoistic to believe that only humans possess the capability to form a society. It is possible that in a distant corner of the universe, another species is also building their own society. Who knows, we could be living in a simulated creation of their own… It would almost be comforting to imagine that we are not alone in the universe.

Do you possess a special skill or talent to amuse guests at a party?

I am skilled at juggling for a decent duration – long enough to impress briefly. However, I can only do so with round objects and not dangerous items such as knives or fire.

Which film had a lasting impact on you when you were younger?

I was definitely not old enough to watch The Shining, a truly terrifying movie. As a child, I enjoyed watching fantasy and far-fetched horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street. But when I finally saw The Shining, my perspective changed. I realized that true horror lies in seclusion and the pressure of meeting a writing deadline.

When was the most recent time you were dishonest?

I regularly back out of plans by making up a false excuse. It’s not because I have other plans – I simply don’t feel like going out. I want to be more truthful about this because every time I do it, I wonder why I didn’t just say that I need some alone time. However, I always end up coming up with a different excuse, like having a sore throat or a late work schedule. In reality, I should just be honest – nowadays, I believe most people would understand.
