In Saturday’s friendly match against Slovakia, Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner scored a goal just six seconds after kick-off, making it the fastest recorded goal in international football.
A 24-year-old athlete ran quickly from the center of the field and effortlessly maneuvered past three obstacles. He then took a shot from beyond the boundaries of the box, sending it into the lower corner.
As the supporters of Slovakia watched in shock, the Austrians in the visiting section at the Tehelne pole stadium in Bratislava rejoiced as their RB Leipzig midfielder was surrounded by his fellow players.
“We have previously tried this variation, vigorously sprinting from the very beginning. By some miracle, the series of actions led to me getting the opportunity to run,” stated Baumgartner.
In 2013, Germany’s Lukas Podolski scored a goal against Ecuador sooner than expected, taking the ball from a defender and scoring in only nine seconds. However, on Saturday, Florian Wirtz surpassed this achievement by scoring a goal in only seven seconds in his team’s 2-0 victory against France in Lyon.
Andreas Weimann scored a late goal with eight minutes remaining to secure Austria’s win over Slovakia.
Austria is currently getting ready for Euro 2024 through friendly matches against Turkey, Serbia, and Switzerland. In the group stage held in Germany, they will compete against France, the Netherlands, and either Poland or Wales.
