Furiosa, a new film in the Mad Max series, is scheduled to debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

The highly anticipated action-packed film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is scheduled to debut at this year’s Cannes movie festival.

George Miller, the director of the Academy Award-winning film Mad Max: Fury Road, is revisiting the world of the film with a prequel that delves into the backstory of Furiosa, a character portrayed in the previous film by Charlize Theron. Anya Taylor-Joy will take on the role of Furiosa, with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke also appearing in the prequel.

“I have been carrying the concept for this prequel for more than ten years,” stated Miller. “I am extremely excited to come back to the Cannes Festival with Anya, Chris, and Tom [Burke] to present Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. There is no better location than La Croisette to showcase this film to a global audience.”

In the year 2015, the film Mad Max: Fury Road made its debut at the festival and ultimately earned six Academy Awards and $380 million globally. Critic Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described it as “wildly chaotic, incredibly loud, and completely excessive” in his critique.

Following this, Miller debuted Three Thousand Years of Longing at the festival, a fantasy drama featuring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba in lead roles.

When questioned about Taylor-Joy assuming the role, Theron praised her as “one of the most talented actresses.”

“I’ve never been dirtier or bloodier, which is really saying something,” Taylor-Joy commented about the filming experience.

The actor, known for their characters in The Queen’s Gambit, The Witch, and The Menu, will also appear in Apple’s upcoming action romance The Gorge with Miles Teller.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will screen out of competition at the festival, shortly before its theatrical release. The full line-up will be officially announced next month but speculation suggests new films from Jacques Audiard, Andrea Arnold and Francis Ford Coppola may be included. This year’s jury will be led by Greta Gerwig.
