The Music Legends series by The Royal Mint now includes George Michael, with three commemorative coins honoring the late pop icon.
Reworded: The coin is offered in different colors such as gold, silver, and black with a design showcasing Michael wearing iconic aviator sunglasses and a cross-shaped earring, as seen in the music video for his 1987 hit single “Faith.” It also includes a depiction of a guitar fretboard on the front. The back of the coin is engraved with the lyrics from the song.
The coin has been authorized by the estate of Michael, as stated by The Royal Mint. A spokesperson from George Michael Entertainment expressed their gratitude for the tribute and mentioned that the late singer, who passed away at the age of 53 in 2016, would have been humbled and proud that a respected institution chose to honor his memory in such a manner.
King Charles and his privy council have approved the creation of new coins in varying values, including 50p, £2, £10, £25, £100, and £200. Along with the Music Legends series, other coins commemorating James Bond, Star Wars, and Robin Hood will also be released.
The Director of Collector Services at the Royal Mint, Rebecca Morgan, stated that George Michael, who rose to fame with Wham! and went on to become one of the most successful solo artists ever, is a worldwide sensation and a great influence on generations through his music and individual fashion sense. With a huge fan base, the official UK coin created to honor his life and impact is a welcomed addition.

The currency was created by Sandra Deiana, who expressed a desire for “a meticulous depiction of George Michael that captured his intense stare and charming demeanor”.
Michael becomes a member of the Police, alongside other musicians such as Dame Shirley Bassey, the only woman to have her image featured on a coin, as well as the Rolling Stones, the Who, Elton John, Queen, and David Bowie, in the Music Legends collection.
Michael has recently received a new posthumous award – a coin. This happened in December of 2023, when his 1984 single Last Christmas as part of Wham! reached the No 1 spot on the UK Christmas chart after 39 years. This set a new record for the longest gap between first release and No 1. Additionally, a documentary about Wham! and Michael’s early pop career was released on Netflix in June. The film focuses on their journey from 1981 until 1987, when Michael began his solo career.
